Originating in western Spain near the Portuguese border, the Tagus River flows across central Portugal before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean just west of Lisbon. During Portugal’s Golden Age (15th–17th centuries) explorers Henry the Navigator and Vasco da Gama set out for the new world along this river, and it was an essential part of the trade route in the centuries that followed, as riches from India and Brazil poured into Portugal.
"One of my favourite moments on the trip was sitting back with my feet up, by myself, at the front of a small boat that we took back from the Discoveries Monument to Commerce Square. I still vividly remember the breathtaking views on a beautiful day, with a soft breeze blowing off the water. It was such a meditative experience. We were actually just about to take an Uber back to save a few dollars when I said 'screw it, let's boat back'. Carpe Diem!" - CB
